When 1 Van 1 Man Began

Business in the UK was a different environment in 2010. The tremors of the recession had become quite real; businesses were jolted out of complacency and forced to innovate. The removals trade, itself a very traditional industry, was no exception. Our target market – homeowners, renters and landlords – lay at the centre of the housing crisis. Firms around the country had their finger on the pulse, looking for trends in the market and how the “current economic climate” would affect those we relied on for business.

In tandem with the recession, businesses also had to adjust to the growing digital world. Whether they liked it or not, removal companies were pushed to go online, to chat in social media, to cater for phone users and engage in the great arena of Google rankings. For some, whose values were rooted in the ‘practical’ side of the business, this was all a nuisance. For others, it opened up a whole new world.

Where We’re At

Although I was daunted with the challenge at hand, I found the world in which I acquired 1 Van 1 Man to be quite exciting. It gave me the opportunity to change the rules and craft a business whose purpose was not only to drive around and move boxes.

Shaped by its environment, 1 Van 1 Man has become something of a home mover’s hub; an online repository of mortgage advice, cleaning tips and practical guides to moving home. The business and the website have become two sides of the same coin, whose purposes go far beyond beyond paying the bills.

Although it is a big city, York is a community. Its people are good humoured, friendly and appreciative of neighbourly values. I like to think that 1 Van 1 Man has captured some of that spirit and reflected it with a friendly online presence.
